Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during the free consultation?

Our free consultation is an opportunity to ask questions, share your concerns, and learn more about Busy Bee SLP.

We'll discuss your child's communication, learn more about what you're looking for, answer your questions, and determine whether Busy Bee SLP may be a good fit for your family.

A consultation does not obligate you to begin services.

What will therapy look like?

Therapy at Busy Bee SLP is play-based, child-led, and functional. Sessions may include games, toys, books, movement activities, and everyday routines, all intentionally selected to support your child's communication goals in a natural and engaging way.

Therapy is individualized based on your child's strengths, interests, communication needs, and goals.

What ages do you work with?

Busy Bee SLP provides services for children and young adults ages 0–21.

Where will therapy take place?

Busy Bee SLP provides community-based speech-language therapy, which may take place in your home, daycare, preschool, or another appropriate community setting.

Do I need to be present during sessions?

Yes, a parent or caregiver must be present during all in-home sessions.

Does my child need a diagnosis or referral?

Since Busy Bee SLP is a private-pay practice, a physician referral or formal diagnosis is not required to contact us or begin the process of determining whether speech-language therapy may be appropriate.

Does my child need an evaluation before starting therapy?

Yes, an evaluation is typically completed before beginning ongoing therapy. This allows us to understand your child's current communication skills and develop an individualized plan of care.

However, a new evaluation may not be required if your child has a recent evaluation and/or current IEP with sufficient information to establish an appropriate plan of care. Families can provide relevant reports and documentation for review.

Can you work on my child's IEP goals?

Yes. If your child has an IEP, you may provide a copy for review. When appropriate, your therapist can incorporate relevant IEP goals into your child's individualized plan of care while also addressing functional communication needs across everyday environments.

Collaboration with families and, when appropriate and authorized, other members of your child's educational or care team can help support consistency across settings.

Do you accept Step Up for Students?

Yes! Busy Bee SLP currently accepts eligible Step Up for Students scholarship funding.

Please contact us directly to discuss your child's eligibility, required documentation, and the process for beginning services.

Do you accept insurance?

Busy Bee SLP is currently a private-pay practice and does not bill insurance directly.

Superbills are available upon request for families who would like to explore potential out-of-network reimbursement through their insurance provider. Families should contact their insurance company directly to determine whether their plan provides out-of-network benefits for speech-language therapy.

Do you provide parent coaching?

Yes! Parent coaching is an important part of community-based speech-language therapy because communication happens throughout everyday life, not just during therapy.

We encourage parents and caregivers to participate in sessions whenever possible. Therapy may include modeling strategies, practicing techniques together, and identifying opportunities to support communication during everyday routines and play.

Do you offer virtual therapy?

Yes. In addition to community-based services, Busy Bee SLP provides telehealth services when applicable.

Please contact us to discuss your child's needs and whether a virtual consultation or service may be appropriate.

How often will my child receive therapy?

The frequency of therapy is individualized based on your child's communication needs, goals, evaluation results, and family preferences.

Recommendations may range from weekly to less frequent sessions, depending on what is appropriate for your child. Therapy frequency can also be adjusted over time as your child's needs and progress change.

How are therapy goals chosen?

Goals are individualized based on your child's evaluation results, communication strengths and needs, caregiver priorities, and the skills that are most meaningful and functional for your child's everyday life.

Goals are reviewed and adjusted as your child develops and progresses.

How will I know if my child is making progress?

Progress is monitored throughout therapy and shared with families through ongoing communication, discussion during sessions, and formal progress reports as appropriate.

You are always encouraged to ask questions, share observations, and discuss your child's progress or changing needs at any time.

Do you offer flexible scheduling?

Yes! Busy Bee SLP understands that families have busy schedules. Flexible scheduling options are available, including Friday and Saturday appointments, based on current availability.

Contact us to discuss available appointment times.

What if my child is sick, or we need to cancel?

Please keep your child home if they have a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, a contagious illness, or are not well enough to comfortably participate in therapy. If your child is sick, please notify your therapist as soon as possible.

At least 24 hours' notice is required for cancellations. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours' notice or missed appointments without notice will be charged the full session fee. Late cancellation fees due to illness will be waived with proof of a doctor's note.

Regular attendance is important for your child's progress. Repeated cancellations or inconsistent attendance may result in a change to your scheduled appointment time or discontinuation of services.

If your therapist needs to cancel a session, families will be notified as soon as possible and offered a make-up session when availability permits.
